Collage a Memory with Marisa
Makerspace Urbana

Makerspace Urbana is located in the basement of the Independent Media Center. You can get to it from the ramp on the north side of the building, from the stairs down on the south side of the building, or by entering the IMC from the stairs on the west side, walking past the birds, and turning right twice to find the stairs down.

Organized by Makerspace Urbana
Instructors

Join us for a hands-on workshop that reimagines old materials into new stories. Using archival and found objects such as magazines, postcards, photographs, slides, and strips of celluloid film, participants will learn creative collage and remixing techniques to transform fragments of the past into personal works of art. The makerspace will also be stocked with a range of paper supplies, fiber and fabric materials, scrapbooking supplies, and other craft materials. Participants are welcome to bring their own archival items or keepsakes to incorporate. (Photocopies of your 2D materials can be made in the makerspace if you would prefer not to use the originals.)

What You’ll Do:

  • Explore creative techniques for collage, scrapbooking, and mixed-media art.
  • Experiment with archival materials and found objects to tell new stories.
  • Try out makerspace tools like our button maker to create unique keepsakes.

What You’ll Take Home:

  • A completed artwork—such as a collage, scrapbook page, button, or piece of jewelry.
  • Skills for making art from archival and personal materials.
  • A renewed connection to memory-making through creative reuse.

Workshop Goal:

To create new memories and narratives from old ones, while learning how to work with archives and found objects in playful, creative, and meaningful ways.
