Makerspace Urbana Tool Lending Policy

As part of the Makerspace Urbana mission to provide an open lab environment for our community, we will permit community members and organizations to borrow tools under certain conditions.

Who May Borrow Tools

  • Only keymembers may borrow tools
  • Keymembers may borrow on behalf of another person but the keymember is fully responsible for the tool

Lending Period

  • Tools may be borrowed for a maximum of one week.
  • [Returned before open hours?]
  • All tools must be returned to Makerspace Urbana by close of business on their due date
  • Members may renew each tool once if they contact the keymembers list prior to the due date

Responsibilities of the Borrower

  • By borrowing an item, a keymember is certifying that he/she is capable of using that tool safely and properly.
  • If a tool is 30 days late, the keymember is given a 1 week grace period to return, replace, or pay for the tool or key membership is revoked.
  • If the tool is not returned within the 30 days + a 1 week grace period, the keymember is responsible for the full replacement cost.
  • If the tool is severely misused or neglected,  the keymember is responsible for the full replacement cost.
  • Replacement costs must be paid in full before borrowing additional items.

Conditions for Borrowing

  • Makerspace Urbana reserves the right to use appropriate steps to retrieve delinquent tools or unpaid fees.  Makerspace Urbana also reserves the right to forgive fees due to special circumstances.
  • The keymember agrees that Makerspace Urbana is not responsible for any manufacturing defects present in borrowed tools.
  • The keymember agrees that if any borrowed tool is damaged or otherwise becomes unsafe, he or she must immediately discontinue use of the tool, return the tool, and notify Makerspace Urbana.
  • All tools are to be returned clean and in the same or better condition as they were issued, barring normal wear and tear.
  • Makerspace Urbana reserves the right to refuse the loan of any item at its discretion.
